My 2 cents

Months ago Susan G Komen made a decision to “stop” funding to Planned Parenthood. I place the stop in quotations as they were not going to cut current funding; they were just stating they would not be eligible to apply for future funding.

There was a large bru-ha-ha in the media and on the 3 Day Facebook page over the issue. Ultimately, Komen reversed their decision, got rid of the person in charge of making the decision and faced yet even more criticism. At the time I thought of writing a blog post and I forgot. For one I was pregnant-very pregnant and planning for the new arrival took up more of my time. I was also a bit conflicted on my thoughts and did not want to make a rash decision or making a scathing blog entry without first sorting out my feelings. I saw both sides of the issue.

Let me first state in my personal life I am Pro-Life, however I support a woman’s right to choose. I believe it is NOT my place to judge. A safe stance, maybe but that is my feelings on the matter. I have used Planned Parenthood for their medical services. I had my first gynecological exam in college at a Planned Parenthood when I didn’t have insurance. They first taught me to do a Breast Self-Exam. So I know that they are not all about abortions. What I am 100% for though is a Cure. Pro-Cure matters more to me. I decided to stick with Komen and continue to walk in the 3-Day. So you might understand why it angers me that months later, people still decide to bring the issue up on the 3-Day Facebook page. The 3 Day asked about packing tips, and someone has to bring up the Planned Parenthood issue. They actually stated that the 3 Day owes something to the walkers who were devoted to them and would train in triple digit heat like the Arizona walkers who now left the 3 day because of issue. Really? REALLY??? I AM one of those Arizona walkers, waking up at 4:15 or earlier in the morning to walk as soon as the sun comes up in 100+ degree weather to train for November. And yes at 4:15 in the morning, it is still 100 degrees or more out. Does it suck that our training time occurs square in the middle of an Arizona summer? Sure. Is it a deterrent? Nope. It’s a small sacrifice to make in the name of working for a cure. Do I feel Komen owes me for my training? Nope. I knew what was involved when I signed up the first year, and continue to sign up each additional year.

I’m pretty sure that when I signed up for my first 3 Day in 2008 it was because I believed in the cause. Not because I felt that my time should be compensated if a decision was made I disagreed with and I chose not to participate any longer. Take a look at any company in the world-both FOR profits and NON profits. I’m sure you will find a decision or partnership you disagree with. You then have to look at the facts and make a decision for yourself. Once you do-GET OVER IT! Some people may not agree with your decision, and you may not agree with theirs. At least have the respect to honor the decision others have made. Komen made a decision that was polarizing no matter what side of the issue you fall on. It was months ago. If you are one of the people who chose to no longer support Susan G Komen, I respect your decision. Now please respect my decision to continue to fight for a cure and stop bringing the issue up. I have taken plenty of time to think it through. I’ve made my decision. Komen has my support. They have my time, my sweat, my tears, and my donors dollars. Because my donors also still believe in the cause. Because they have lost loved ones, or are watching a loved one battle. Because we are Pro-Cure.
